Vampires in Havana is a live jazz concert created by Cuban drummer Ruly Herrera, inspired by Juan Padrón’s cult animated film of the same name.
A landmark of Cuban cinema, Vampires in Havana is celebrated for its unique blend of noir aesthetics, surreal humour, political satire, and social commentary. Herrera and Real Project bring this iconic universe to the stage through a bold musical reinterpretation of the film’s original soundtrack.
Combining jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms, funk, and cinematic improvisation, the performance transforms the film’s characters, atmosphere, and irreverent energy into a vibrant live experience. More than a soundtrack recreation, Vampires in Havana is a complete musical journey that bridges cinema and contemporary Cuban jazz.
A graduate of Havana’s Amadeo Roldán Conservatory, Ruly Herrera is a prominent figure in Cuba’s contemporary jazz scene. He began his professional career at 15 and has contributed to more than 50 recordings alongside Cuban and international artists. In 2013, he co-founded Real Project, an award-winning ensemble that blends Cuba’s rhythmic heritage with influences from funk, rock, pop, and contemporary jazz. Their debut album received the Jazz Ensemble Award at Cubadisco, Cuba’s leading music industry event, and the group has continued to collaborate internationally, including with Grammy-nominated trumpeter Theo Croker.
