‘Big Vicious’, New album Spring 2020 (ECM)

A trumpet player with luminous sound, dandy with impeccable style, figure of the “Big Apple” with which everyone wants to play, trumpet player Avishai Cohen is one of those musicians who built the New York sound of the 21st century. As a good post-modern musician, he has integrated all styles, all genres, all traditions. Accustomed to more acoustic formats, Avishai Cohen returns with “Big Vicious”, a combo of shock that explores the sounds of rock, jazz and psychedelic. Born from several jam sessions on the Lower East Side, the band is constantly driven by an unusual ecstatic energy (two drummers!) A challenge to labels, but a great moment for the ears!

Avishai Cohen was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1978. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, he suddenly gained international recognition by placing third in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Trumpet Competition. It is in New York that he begins to actively participate in the bubbling scene federated by Smalls Club in the West Village of New York. In addition to directing the Triveni trio with Omer Avital and Nasheet Waits, the trumpeter is a member of the SF Jazz Collective. Released at ECM, his last two albums were hailed by a unanimous press: “Shock Jazz Magazine 2016”, “The New York Times Best Albums of 2017”. He is currently preparing “Big Vicious” his next album, expected for early 2020.
